The Republic of Ireland was often referred to in the 2010s as the “Celtic Tiger”, in reference to the economic progress of Asian countries that could be likened to Ireland’s rapid economic catch-up. For years, the country indeed boasted the highest growth rate in Western Europe. This was accompanied by a substantial increase in wages (well exceeding the European Union average today), a low unemployment rate – between 4% and 5% – and the country’s specialisation in several future-oriented fields such as biotechnology and IT. This European economic miracle particularly benefited the capital Dublin and its region.

The significant economic development of the last 30 years in the Republic of Ireland has made the country attractive, as the Irish economy increasingly needs highly qualified professionals who are not available in sufficient numbers locally.

The presence of renowned American companies for decades (Apple, Google, Microsoft to name just a few) and a strongly developed biotechnology sector contribute to this appeal.

Labour shortages are therefore relatively significant and tend to increase, not only in cutting-edge fields but also for much lower-skilled positions. Tourism, for example, is also booming and can offer interesting opportunities.
